Seventeen companies on our register import telecom and electronics goods, from WorldCall Telecom's network equipment down to mobile phones, accessories, consumer electronics and LED lighting brought in by trading houses. The line that matters most is whether the item transmits or receives on a radio frequency. If it does, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has to approve the type before it can be sold here, and that sits alongside customs, not instead of it.
Radio equipment answers to PTA as well as customs
Mobile phones, routers, modems, radios and network hardware like WorldCall's are regulated equipment before they are a customs question. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority issues Type Approval for equipment that connects to, or transmits on, the public telecommunication network, and a device without it is not approved for sale in Pakistan regardless of what customs does with the shipment.
Consumer electronics that do not transmit — LED fixtures, non-networked appliances, most accessories — do not carry that requirement. The distinction is the device, not the trading house importing it, so a shipment can mix goods that need PTA approval with goods that do not.

Ask before the order is placed, not after it lands
Type approval runs on the model, and PTA publishes what it has already approved. Before an order is confirmed we would rather check whether the exact model is on that list than find out at the point of clearance that it is not.
A model that has never been approved can still be approved — that is a process run with PTA, not a dead end — but it takes time the shipment on the water does not have. The importer who asks before ordering gets a straight answer while there is still time to act on it.
We cannot get a device sold, connected or approved in Pakistan without PTA behind it, and we will not file a declaration on the hope that an approval arrives before customs asks for it. If the model is not type-approved, that is the honest answer, even when it is not the one the importer wanted to hear.
